Tik Tok Trek

Star Trek plus pretty much anything equals epic. This video is no exception. Tik Tok Trekkies…Tik Tok. Hope everyone is having an awesome Tuesday morning!

May The Force Be With Us

Star Wars I owe George Lucas dearly. You see – Star Wars has been a huge part of my life. I was never what you might call a fanboy. I never pretended to be a Wookie or pilot the Death Star or be orphaned on Tattoine. Honestly, I barely remember watching the films as a child.

My first real Star Wars experience came when they re-released the trilogy to theaters in the mid-90’s. I took a date to try and see Return of The Jedi and on the way I got pulled over for running a red light (Author’s Note: Do not drive a motor vehicle like you would a Podracer) and despite my attempts to get us there on time we still missed the movie. Oh, and I also got a $200 ticket. So Andrea, again I apologize and I sincerely hope you have finally overcome that traumatic night.

After that debacle and subsequently seeing the next Star Wars film on a mild-altering substance, I decided that George and I needed a break. But fate brought us back together at the release of The Phantom Menace. The newspaper I worked for in Germany wanted to cover release day, and it piqued my interest. I volunteered for the story and once again we danced the dance.

And I fell in love. I adored the new films. (I know, I know… Haters keep your comments to yourself.) I assumed after Episode 3 I was done with Star Wars. But I had a son. And the cycle started again.

It was all due to Lucas’s incredible marketing machine. There are all sorts of things Star Wars. Lunch-boxes, coffins, games, toilet paper; you just name it. Dylan’s particular pleasure was Star Wars: The Clone Wars on Cartoon Network. He loved it and it got him asking me all about Star Wars. For a child whose family had recently split up it was an entirely new World to escape in. Plus it was something special we shared in common. It was just ours – sister need not apply.

We submerged ourselves pretty deeply into the World of Star Wars. We bought Nintendo DS’s and two copies of the Lego Star Wars game. We’d watch a scene from one of the movies and then hop onto our DS and play the corresponding level together. But it’s about a lot more than just escapism. The movies have allowed us to have some awesome dialogue; relationships, good and evil, right and wrong, fathers and sons, split families, honesty. It’s bonded us on an entirely new level. And for that, I owe you greatly Mr. Lucas.

Honk Kong Phooey

Anyone that knows me can tell you I am a film fanatic. I try to watch as many movies as I can, from all types of genres, as quickly as I can. I love film as a medium. It’s a phenomenal way to tell a story/make a point, etc. But I have my dark side. My favorite films? They’re not dramas, or documentaries, or even the films that move and motivate us. I am a huge connoisseur of two styles: Film Noir and Blaxploitation. I’m not going to explain them to you – just click the links and read the wiki on these two genres.

Film Noir’s still exist, although they aren’t released with the frequency of their heyday -the late 40′s and early 50′s. Modern examples include 1989′s The Big Easy, the 1997 smash L.A. Confidential and the 2002 film Road to Perdition. Blaxploitation films, on the other hand, aren’t really made at all anymore. They stereotyped blacks and whites so badly that many groups (NAACP, Urban League and more) effectively banned the genre. Shaft, The Mack, Blacula and The Human Tornado are all classics.

This is the trailer from my favorite Blaxploitation film OF ALL TIME – “Black Belt Jones.” I put it up in the hopes that some of you might actually decide to check out this genre of film. And because I like it. Enjoy!

Get Some Nuts

I love Mr. T. It all started when I was a bright-eyed grade school student and saw B.A. Barracus driving around that pimped-out van with the A-Team. I later saw Rocky and thought that Mr. T was awesome. I was right. I really enjoy his positive attitude and outlook on life. In a day where good people and role models are hard to come by, he is one of a kind. That’s my opinion and why I like him.

Having said that, I present you with a Snickers advertisement that Mr. T did that aired overseas. (Mainly Australia, I think.) This ad has been called homophobic, immoral and several other fun words. What do you think? I know Mr. T didn’t write any of this – but should he have known better? Does it offend you? Is it innappropriate?

Joker, Smoker, Midnight Toker

This dude is definitly a midnight smoker – cause this is some wacky, wacky stuff. All I can say is that he has too much free time. And that’s coming from a guy with too much free time himself. Really funny. Enjoy!

Mr. President

A really wild and cary look at the life of George W. Bush and how he got to be in the White House. I can’t believe Oliver Stone has done this while W’s still in office – that just takes gigantic balls.

The Doctor is In!

Dr. Horrible

I've got a master's in horribleness...

So I stumbled across this strange little 42-minute musical, Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, starring Neil Patrick Harris. It’s a story that’s all about love, hate, loss and superheroes. (Who didn’t see that coming?) It is a really cool little film and you can check it out for free until midnight tomorrow. It was a side project several writers from Buffy the Vampire fame worked on during the writer’s strike. It’s a little of the beaten path, but very, very cool. Check it out for free while you can – come Monday you’ll have to buy it in the iTunes store.
